Gigasampler Tutorial: Lesson 11
Tascam Gigastudio home

In this last lesson i will explain how to use gigasampler "live", as a normal hardware samlper. I suppose you know how you identify an instrument in the MIDI standard, with two number that identify the bank number and the patch. I hope you know what is a MIDI channel…

I have three .gig patches (synth1, synth2, synth3). If you load them all in the editor you will note how they are all assigned to bank 0, and to every one of them I assigned a different instrument patch (1 for synth1.gig, 2 for synth2.gig, 3 for synth3.gig). You can vary this setting by double clicking on the instrument name (see figure 1, when I showed the case in which you identify the patch number). In the same window you can specify also the bank number.

Now oper gigasampler and load the synths. To do this double click on synth.gig, then double click on synth2.gig and finally double click on synth3.gig. You will see what I show in figure 2. We have assigned the instruments synth1,2,3 to MIDI channel 1,2,3. Now, if you play your masterkeyboard on channel 1 you will hear the synth1. If you change the midi channel to channel 2 you will play synth2 and finally, if you change the midi channel to channel 3 you will play synth3.

Now let fix the masterkeyboard MIDI channel on 1. If you send a patch change message on channel 1, in orger to send patch number 2, you will immediatly begin to play synth2 on channel 1. If you click on "layout" you will see the screen as shown in figure3, where you find all the current gigasampler channel settings: the instruments loaded, their patch number and the channel to which their are assigned. Honestly, i think these thing are very intuitive, once you manage the different between MIDI channels, patches and banks.

You can also load in you sequencer the file exampe1.mid and see how the first track is assigned to channel1, the second to channel 2 and the third to channel 3. These tracks will play the instruments assigned to the different gigasampler channels. The fourth track will always play on channel 1, but I've inserted patch change message, in order to change, on channel 1, the instrument played.

With this lesson I've ended my gigasampler tutorial. I hope I have been clear, but i hope to have give you ideas and suggestion on how to use this revolutionary program in a more creative way. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have doubts or if you have comments (both positive and negative) or suggestion. I'm very interested in you opinions about my work, and I hope to have your feedback! Happy music to everyone!
